NORMAN D SHAW

We are sorry to have to tell you of the loss of one of our Life Vice-Presidents and long standing member, who passed away peacefully on 27th January aged 98, after a short illness.

Norman joined the society in 1946 when it started up again after WWII and served loyally in many capacities ever since.

Well-known throughout Sussex for his knowledge and love of the Gilbert & Sullivan comic operas, he brought his rich baritone voice and sense of humour to many G&S character roles, with great success. These performances were given at the Palace Pier Theatre and at Her Majesty's Theatre in New Road — both have now disappeared from Brighton's Theatre scene.

He also played various roles in other shows, at The Essoldo, The Hippodrome and The Theatre Royal. At some of these venues he also took over the baton as Musical Director ; and occasionally as MD for other societies ( Lewes and Southwick ).

In his capacity as Chorus master, he trained members for our Serenades and Medleys (Charity performances) at The Dome, where he was also conductor for many of our successful pantomimes. At the time, ours was the only one in town, before the commercial theatres took over the genre.

Norman served variously as Vice-Chairman, Publicity Chairman and assisted with the Patrons scheme and our Centenary researches. His family had business links with one of the founders of BHOS, Argyle Galloway, whose grandson, Roy, takes a keen interest in the society. Norman's Godson, Richard Jolly, is the son of our one-time President, Arthur Jolly, a keen supporter of BHOS who gave garden parties for us at his home.

Norman attended our AGM/social in 1995 the evening before his 90th birthday and was given a rousing cheer and standing ovation - a very popular member whose genial personality endeared him to all and who's looks and energy belied his years.
